Empreinte Noire Pinot Noir Grand Cru Brut 2012 is a vintage cuvée from Ambonnay, produced at the family domaine of Eric Rodez. After working as cellarmaster at Krug, he returned to the estate in the early 1990s and developed his own approach, cultivating around six hectares of vineyards under biodynamic practices. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir and vinified entirely in small oak barrels without malolactic fermentation. Dosage is 2 g/L. It typically undergoes 7 to 10 years of lees aging in the domaine’s cellars. The style is defined by precision, saline minerality and a structured profile built for long development.
Eric Rodez is an independent Champagne house founded in 1984 by an eighth-generation member of the Rodez family. He is among the few producers in Champagne to adopt organic and biodynamic viticulture — a decision he notes was easier for the vines than for the family, given the risks in Champagne’s climate. After many years at Krug, Rodez refined his approach to blending, creating precise vertical blends built largely on reserve wines. His cuvées bring together 5–10 vintages, forming a cohesive structure with depth and balance. The house style is defined by barrel vinification and low dosage, not exceeding 5 g/l. Rodez approaches his wines as compositions, with each cuvée built like a distinct, non-repeating melody.
