Bruno Clair already has an impressive array of holdings in the Côtes de Nuits, from which he has been furnishing wine lovers with beautifully made, classically-styled wines for many years.
Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay Blanc 2022 is crafted from Chardonnay planted in 1988 and 1998 on clay-limestone soils at 280m altitude with a south-east exposure. Fermented in stainless steel vats for 2–3 weeks, then aged 18 months in oak barrels and foudres, this Marsannay Blanc shows a delicate profile. It opens with a light bouquet of brioche, though still evolving in definition. The palate is soft and almost “fluffy,” offering an easy-drinking character with a gentle grapefruit-tinged finish. A charming Chardonnay that highlights the approachable side of Marsannay.
One of Domaine Bruno Clair’s great strengths is the steady, distinctive style of its wines, maintained for decades through Bruno Clair’s direct involvement. Though he owns famed grand crus like Clos de Bèze and Bonnes-Mares, Bruno is especially proud of Marsannay. This northernmost commune of the Côte d'Or was in decline until the 1980s, relying on bulk Gamay sent to Dijon and lacking its own appellation until 1987. Bruno’s grandfather, Joseph Clair, took the bold step of planting Pinot Noir here, sparking a remarkable turnaround. Bruno believes no other Burgundian area has seen such an impressive leap in quality over the past thirty years. Today, this includes Marsannay Blanc 2022 — a clear example of how far the village and domaine have come.
