Domaine Bruno Clair Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2022 comes from a historic vineyard planted in 1902. This 1.1438-hectare plot lies on clay-limestone soils at 250m altitude, facing east/north-east. Made from Pinot Noir with 20–30% whole bunch fermentation and 10–15 days maceration in wooden vats, it matures for 18–20 months in oak, around 40% new. The wine shows a nose of black fruits, berries, licorice and sweet spices. On the palate it’s full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a refined powdery tannin that underlines the Premier Cru character of La Dominode.

Domaine Bruno Clair stands among Burgundy’s most respected producers, renowned for crafting wines of remarkable finesse and depth—these are the kinds of cuvées that many enthusiasts long for. Whether intended for early enjoyment or long aging, each bottle carries a certain prestige, and their limited availability often drives up demand and price over time. The story begins with Joseph Clair (1889-1971), who founded the famed Domaine Clair-Daü in Marsannay. After World War I, Burgundy’s vineyards were in dire condition, with many plots abandoned. Vignerons in Marsannay responded by replacing Gamay and Aligoté with the nobler Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Around the same period, Marsannay Rosé was born, providing crucial support for growers struggling to sell red wine. To this day, Marsannay remains the only Burgundy appellation that produces red, white, and rosé. Joseph’s son, Bernard Clair, joined the family estate in 1939. Together they built up an exceptional domaine, with 38 hectares that included some of the Côte de Nuits’ most celebrated sites like Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Bonnes-Mares, Musigny, Clos St-Jacques, and Clos Vougeot, as well as the distinguished La Dominode vineyard in Savigny-lès-Beaune. When Bernard took over fully, he solidified the domaine’s reputation from 1939 to 1982 by carefully selecting outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plants, laying the foundation for future generations. Bruno Clair, Joseph’s grandson, carries this legacy forward. Starting in 1979, he established his own domaine with plots in Marsannay, Fixin, part of La Dominode in Savigny-lès-Beaune, and extensive vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. Family disagreements eventually led to the breakup of Domaine Clair-Daü in 1985, but Bruno reclaimed key family parcels, including Clos de Bèze, Clos Saint-Jacques, Cazetiers, Vosne-Romanée, Clos de Fontenay, and Chambolle-Musigny. The estate grew further in the 1990s with vineyards in Corton-Charlemagne, Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton, and Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle, reaching its current 25 hectares. Under Bruno’s direction, the domaine is fully hands-on: everything from vineyard care to harvest and bottling is managed by his dedicated team. The wines are widely admired for how they combine power with graceful elegance. One of the jewels of the estate, the Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2022, comes from old vines and stands out for its pure red fruit, earthy undertones and fine tannic structure—showing the pedigree that makes this climat one of the most sought-after in Savigny.

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode was also still quite primary and unevolved when I tasted it from barrel, unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries, berries, licorice and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a chassis of sweet, powdery tannin, it's built for the cellar.
