Domaine Hudelot Noellat

Nestled in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat stands as a paragon of traditional winemaking, seamlessly blending heritage with meticulous craftsmanship. Established in 1962 by Alain Hudelot, the estate has evolved into one of Burgundy’s most esteemed producers, renowned for its expressive Pinot Noirs that capture the essence of their terroir.

The foundation of Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat was laid when Alain Hudelot inherited vineyards in Vougeot and Nuits-Saint-Georges. His marriage in 1978 to Odile Noëllat, granddaughter of the esteemed vigneron Charles Noëllat, brought additional prestigious parcels into the fold, including holdings in Vosne-Romanée. This union not only merged two venerable wine families but also enriched the domaine's portfolio with some of Burgundy's most coveted climats.

In 2008, Alain passed the reins to his grandson, Charles Van Canneyt, a graduate of Dijon University’s oenology program.Charles has upheld the family’s commitment to quality, introducing subtle refinements while preserving the domaine's traditional ethos. His approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of each vineyard to shine through.

Spanning approximately 10 hectares across four villages and 15 appellations, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat's vineyards are a testament to Burgundy's diverse terroirs. The estate boasts holdings in several Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites, including:

Richebourg Grand Cru (0.33 ha): Planted in 1950, this parcel yields wines of profound depth and longevity.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru (0.5 ha): With vines dating back to 1920, this vineyard produces wines noted for their elegance and aromatic complexity.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (0.69 ha): Established in 1950, this site offers wines that balance power with finesse.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 'Les Suchots' (0.33 ha): Planted in 1920, this Premier Cru delivers wines with rich fruit profiles and refined tannins.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 'Les Malconsorts' (0.14 ha): Known for its structure and depth, this parcel contributes to some of the domaine's most sought-after wines.

Under Charles Van Canneyt's stewardship, the winemaking process is characterized by precision and respect for tradition.Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting to ensure optimal quality. Fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts, and a portion of whole clusters is included to enhance complexity. Aging occurs in French oak barrels sourced from forests such as Allier, Vosges, and Citeaux, with new oak usage calibrated to the wine's classification—approximately 20% for village wines and up to 50% for Grand Crus.

Under Charles’s direction, the Domaine has continued to rise in stature among collectors and sommeliers. Each wine is a study in balance—showing clarity of fruit, fine tannins, and a texture that evolves beautifully over time. Whether it’s the layered power of Richebourg or the floral finesse of Romanée-Saint-Vivant, the wines of Hudelot-Noëllat offer some of the most compelling expressions of Pinot Noir in Burgundy.

Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is not only a guardian of Burgundian tradition but a beacon for its future—proving that authenticity, integrity, and thoughtful stewardship can produce wines that speak quietly yet powerfully of their place.
