The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux from Jean-Marie Fourrier originates from vines planted in the 1930s, covering 0.47 hectares. The vineyard work includes traditional destemming, with a measured addition of carefully selected mature stems back to the vats. Vinification combines moderate new oak from Tonnellerie Cadus with amphorae and stainless steel barrels for balanced maturation. The wine displays a medium-bodied structure with moderate concentration. Aromas include mulberries, sweet spices, and confit orange. Compared to the domaine’s other Gevrey village wine, this cuvee shows a broader style, supported by a silky, creamy texture and a subtle toasted strawberry jam presence. Tannins are soft and fully integrated.
In 1994, Jean-Marie Fourrier inherited what was, at the time, a highly troubled estate. The reputation of Domaine Fourrier had been severely damaged by harsh reviews from Robert Parker, which effectively paralyzed wine sales. Although Jean-Marie did not initially see winemaking as his calling and dreamed instead of becoming a pilot, his sense of responsibility to the family domaine prevailed, and he chose not to sell. Even at the height of the crisis, it was clear to him that the estate’s outstanding collection of vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin was its key asset and the foundation for a fresh start. Old Pinot Noir clones — a priceless genetic heritage of the domaine — shaped the distinctive profile of the wines. Fourrier also drew on the experience of legendary figures such as Henri Jayer and Véronique Drouhin. Following their guidance, Jean-Marie adopted a philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar. Over the next twenty years, Domaine Fourrier underwent a complete transformation, with its wines evolving from overlooked outsiders into highly sought-after bottles with “superstar” status.
