Wasenhaus Kanzel Spätburgunder is a premium Pinot Noir from the up-and-coming Wasenhaus winery, located in the Baden region of Germany. Founded by Christoph Wolber and Alexander Götze, Wasenhaus focuses on natural winemaking, drawing inspiration from their experience in Burgundy. The Kanzel vineyard, from which this Spätburgunder is sourced, is a prized site due to its steep, terraced slopes and diverse soils that contribute to the wine's complexity.
The 2022 Spätburgunder Kanzel is characterized by its purity, bright aromas, and spicy, vegetal nuances that reveal concentrated flavors of cherry and blackthorn. It is a dense and fresh wine with a crisp, silky, and straightforward texture, reminiscent of 1er Cru-level Pinot Noir, blending French and German influences. The tannins are fine, fresh, and stimulating. This intriguing Pinot, with a moderate alcohol content (12.5%), is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
The Kanzel cuvée is crafted from a vineyard perched atop a limestone cliff, where cooler temperatures and less sunlight create unique growing conditions. Half of the Pinot Noir used for the Kanzel Spätburgunder comes from a mass selection planted by Dr. Henrik Möbitz, while the other half comes from old German clones. Fermentation involves 50% whole bunches in wooden vats, beginning with carbonic maceration and followed by several pigeages (punch-downs). The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels that have previously held other wines.
