Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes 2022 is made from Pinot Noir grown on a generous 2.2667-hectare plot planted between 1950 and 1990. The vineyard sits at 300m altitude on clay-limestone soils with Comblanchien limestone and limestone with entroques beneath, facing south-east. Fermentation includes 30–50% whole bunches with 10–15 days maceration in wooden vats, followed by 18–20 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% new. This Marsannay shows a deep red to purple hue and reveals notes of blackberries, plums and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is very expressive and powerful, showcasing the character of Les Grasses Têtes.

At Domaine Bruno Clair, vinification is tailored to bring out each wine’s natural character. For reds, whole-bunch fermentation has become more prominent in recent years—ranging from 20 to 50% depending on the appellation. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats over about two weeks with minimal sulfur, and extraction is carefully adjusted to suit each terroir. The wines then mature for 18 to 20 months in oak, with up to half new barrels. White wines begin in stainless steel without sulfur, finish fermenting and age in oak barrels or foudres (using up to 20% new oak). They rest on lees for 16 to 18 months without stirring, allowing the limestone soils to impart a naturally mineral edge. Even the Marsannay Rosé receives meticulous care: half the juice is pressed immediately, while the rest undergoes cold maceration for a few days to extract color and aroma. Now mostly aged in barrels and foudres for 10 to 12 months, the rosé gains extra texture and depth. Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes 2022 perfectly illustrates this thoughtful approach. With bright red fruit, subtle spice and a refined structure, it shows how careful vinification and respect for terroir result in vibrant, expressive wines.

Wine Advocate
The most serious of these four cuvées is the 2022 Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine evocative of blackberries, plums and dark chocolate. More primary at this stage in its élevage, it shows considerable promise.
